The bolt and wing nut that secures my spare tire in the trunk of my 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier have congealed due to rust. How do I remove the spare tire?

1993 Ford Escort 1.9
I have been trouble shooting a cooling system problem. Temp guage slowly goes to the max normal range. I have replaced the thermostat, radiator cooling fan switch (fan does come on and cycle),
head gasket, clamps and hoses, flushed entire system, pressure tested for leaks. The only thing I have found out of the ordinary, is the t-stat housing seems to have a plstic valve or something to allow by-pass. with a great deal of effort and patients I slowly but surly was able to chip away what ever is in the housing re-install t-stat and gasket to no avail. Is ther something I am overloooking??? Please advise when possible. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1996 Dodge status I took it to a mechanic that wasn't a dealer for a problem of the car shutting off. I told him I believed it was an overheat problem. Because I knew that the fan was not operating. He diagnosed the problem and told me I needed head gaskets and a head which he did which was ok because I had been told by others that i may have this problem. However when he returned the car the first couple of times the car still would not run right and it doesnt run right now. The check engine light is now on constantly and it wasnt on before. The transmission is stuck in second which it wasnt before. Between all my complaining and bringing back the car for this and that problem he also repaired an engine seal. My question is this. Could he have caused the check engine light and the trans. stuck in second problem with the work that he did?
