tips on refurbishing my 8-N

Can I get some advice on things I should have done to my " 8n",front mount, since I am going to have it completly over-hauled.
I have a friend that is retired and does these n's to show room quality. I need any advice I can get.
It starts right away when it's cool out,but if I try to start it after it's been running for a while, no such luck.
The brakes are completly gone, the lift drifts back down after time,so you can see I need some good advice and what about a eletronic ignition w/ a 12 volt .
The person thats going to re-do this says there is no need for a 12 volt if it is properly tuned. Any other things I should have done to it?

The lift is a 8 hour job start to finish, pump and hyd top cover.. no rocket science involved.. just some heavy lifting and dinking with possibly rusty knuckle pins on the 3pt. In general if the pump is ok.. parts run from under 100$ to 150-200$ if you need a new cyl..e tc.

Not starting hot can be many things.

Do a compression test.. dry and wet. if she comes out near 90psi.. or at least close.. then look at plugs, and ignition components..

I'd leave it 6v if it works..

brakes may just be shoes.. but certaintly could need axle seals as well.
