Trying to restore and reblade an old mcCormick-deering #9 sickle mower but can't budge the pins that hold the blade to the shoe on the unit. One of these two pins was rusted into an unrecognizeable mass that I chiselled off where it protruded. I've hit it for nearly 2 weeks with PB Blaster and punched at it but it won't budge. I have a small torch with MAPP gas I could heat it with but I'm skeptical that would do any good and not sure whether to heat the pin or the shoe or both!?My gues would be the shoe(hole for the pin). Thanks for any help.

need some more info on your "words". What do you mean by "blades"? Do you mean "ledger plates", the flat serrated-edge plates that fasten to the "guards", if so those are held on with one rivet per guard. The "outer shoe" has a ledger plate also and is again riveted with one rivet. The "inner shoe" on my John Deere No. 5 is held to the "bar" by two 5/8" X 2 1/4" square countersunk head bolts, not pins or rivets. The "inner shoe" is held to the "yoke" by two large "pins" with cotter keys on each end of the pins. Those pins aren"t very tight fitting so they should drive out quite easy. Give us a little more info and details and we should be able to help.

thanks for the reply. Mower is mc-deering #9. To work on the cutter bar I want to remove it by removing 2, 1 in thick pins holding the entire bar to the inner shoe. these "pins" have cotter pins ,now rusted away, holding them in place.the front one of these inner large pins holding the bar to the yolk is what I"m referring to. It"s stuck solid.I believe the rear pin will come out more easy but the front one won"t budge.

Take off the inner shoe and remove the bolts that hold the cutter bar in place,no need to remove the large pins.

55-50, I"ve decided to do the repairs in situ as inconvenient as they might be. This inner front shoe pin won"t budge.Thanks.

Seems like some heat would be OK. Are the pins in the clear enough that you can get a good solid hit with a hammer and punch?

On my John Deere No.5 the yoke is removable from the drag bar. If your McCormick is built that way maybe it is possible to remove the yoke with shoe and the cutter bar and then take the bar, shoe, and yoke to a shop with a heavy press. That would be quite cumbersome and heavy, but it may be a solution.

It will be interesting to know how you finally get it solved so please let us know when the job is done. Thanks

Drill it out.Make a small hole first and chances are a larger drill may cause it to spin in the hole Rivets are soft iron.

I'm not sure what you are doing... are you trying to replace the ledger plate riveted (NOT "pinned") into the outer shoe?

If you are dealing with rivets, they are not only rusted in, but are "expanded in place" from being riveted.

To get them out, you need to either drill them out, or beat the ever loving snot out of them with a hammer and a GOOD (USA-made) pinpunch.

An airhammer with an appropriate-sized punch attachment works, too.

Actually, I'm trying to remove the entire cutter bar from the inner shoe so I can set it on the bench. I'm not even to the ledger plates and knife etc. as yet. the front pin is locked solid but I pretty sure I can get the rear pin out. Thanks
