If your gen is only putting out 6 volts and your batt is fully charged it won't show a charge because the batt voltage will be higher than 6 volts. RW

Check another ammeter if you have one.

Also.. in general, your wire diagram needs to be setup so that the system is a 'NET' charge/discharge system.

IE, have the charge line from the vr go to one side of the ammeter. have all your electrical loads, like lamps and ignition drawn off here.. everything except the starter.. The other side of the ammeter is wired to the battery alone.

IE.. keep loads on the side of the ammeter where the charge device is.

Orient wires based on polarity to show charge as a positive deflection on the meter.

Go with that and you can't go wrong.

Also.. if you have a 6v system.. and the genny isn't putting out 7+ v.. you have a problem..

Is the ammeter moving at all in any direction?? Maybe its mechanically stuck/jammed/corroded. If it works and is wired at the correct polarity ..... . if you turn the lights or ignition on NOT running it should swing over to - discharge and then when running at high RPM ifffff ff the genny is working it should swing over to + charge. If it registers just bass ackwards from that its leads need reversed.

If the charging system works (regardless if ammeter does) the lights should glow noticeably brighter as the engine goes from slow idle (dimmer) to wide open (brighter) and the battery volts shouod rise from 6.3 volts setting to the 6.5 to around 7 volt range at fast RPM, does it????? ?

A battery can be bad and NOT accept any charge, any idea of the battery condition?? have a shop Load Test it if in doubt.

If the ammeter isnt wired right it wont register properly, there should be but one wire on its supply (to battery/starter) terminal and perhaps 2 or more over on its other LOAD Terminal. The LOAD terminal wires down to BAT on the Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay PLUS feeds loads like lights n ignition often via a connection to the switches BAT input terminal.

If shes running if you momentarily dead ground the gennys Field post does she show charge then and/or does the battery voltage rise ??? if she charges ONLY when the gennys Field is dead grounded but NOT otherwise look for a VR problem (be sure its well grounded) or a light switch problem if its the older 2 wire cutout relay system that has the LHBD lights switch look for a switch problem or its not gettign a god ground or the wires open from FLD on genny to the switch.

The genny could also be fine but the battery never gets charged (or working ammeter dont register charge) cuz the cutout relay never closes??? Try to by pass jump around it when running by wiring the BAT and GEN/ARM temporarily together n see if she shows charge then??

MAKE SURE THE BELT IS TIGHT AND BOTH THE GENNY AND VR HAVE A GOOD GROUND, TRY EASY SIMPLE THINGS FIRST like wiring n connections n ammeter wiring

If you need my complete Troubleshooting Procedure for non charging and how to tell if its a VR or a Genny problem, post back n let me know

BOTTOM LINE the battery voltage should rise if the genny is working and if it does shes charging so its just a bad or miswired ammeter.

Help me here guys, does the cub have the screw together water pump pulley like an M ? And does the generator run off the water pump pulley ?
If so I have found several M's with a no charge situation that only had a loose fan belt not turning the fan fast enough to make the generator charge. These tractors had no overheating problem with the slow turning fan, but the generator was not turning fast enough to charge the battery.
