Rusty Fuel gauge sender - Paint it?

I had to send the fuel tank on my old Case diesel out for cleaning and lining. The tank came back great, but the fuel gauge sending unit was a mess. I've sanded and wire brushed it so its mostly shiny. Should I spray prime and paint it? Should I seal it some other way? The switch is about the size of a thermostat, then about 10" of wire, with some kind of a plastic float on the end of the wire.

Thanks for any help,

Tim in New York

When I worked at the Ford dealership, the local Ford Authorized Remanufacturer (FAR) had the "rustable" fuel system parts--like those on in-tank fuel pumps--cad (cadmium) plated.

Might check Eastwood, an auto restoration supplier...they seem to have about anything for that sort of work.
