Hello,

I got a starter problem on my 15.5 HP Briggs&Straton due to not working of decompressor. Can you please tell me what the most common causes are for this problem? Or where I can get a repair manual?

If you can find the model nr on your engine, click on this link. There may be a manual available here that has an exploded view of your engine internals.

Have you checked the valve settings? They are CRITCAL for the decompression feature to function properly.

Can't tell you for sure what the "specs" are, though, without the engine model #

up to now i did nothing to cure :but i doubt that valve setting has to do with it,i think i did not give enough info on the problem:
as the engine is a 15.5hp and the decompression does not work the starter can not make the engine turn:so i feel something does not work in the mechanisme of the automatic decompression,and the valve stays completely my wish is to understand this system before opening te motor and eventually learn what the most common cause is an exploded view of the components would also help but up to now i can not find info or drawings or schema on internet

I'll try this again. The first thing you need to do is determine the valve lash settings for your engine, and the procedure for checking them.

Then, check them.

If this is a typical Briggs, there is a little "bump" on the exhaust cam the SLIGHTLY opens the exhaust valve as the piston is coming up on the compression stroke, releiving the compression for easy starting.

If the valve lash is too great, the valve doesn't get "tweaked" open, and no relief of compression occurs.

So, the first thing to do is get that valve lash checked!

Let us know what you find out!

thank you for your promp reply helping me a lot i'll do as you explain but i would like to understand the complete story :what happens once the engine is running ?is the action of that little bump stopped in one way or other ?and if so how?
