the part that mounts the starter to the block has broken several times. My starter guy said if I'm rolling backwards when I try to start it, it will break, but I have been sitting still on flat ground and have broken 3 of them. please help me!

Make sure that there's a washer on the shaft next to the bushing in the nose piece. I have a 12V system with the original starter on my TO-30 and I have never had a problem with the nose piece breaking.It's shown i the parts manual and has a part number 1 750 440 M1 "Washer, Thrust, Drive End".

ian;

Never had that part break,However had the nose cone break. First time had it welded. 2nd time I went looking and found another nose cone. From a post on this site it was suggested that the timing had to be spot on. Called a friend and got out the I&T manual and timed it by the book.It is easier if there are two people. Also shimed the starter flange out from the block about the thickness of a pop can. Had no trouble after that. Hope this helps. Be careful.
