I have just picked up a very nice MVG4D that I had stripped (due to cracked heads and messed up tins) and wanted to know the difference between the MVG4D and the regular VG4D. I do notice the the crank shaft is much heavier than a previous VG4D I had and the output shaft is pushing 2" verse the smaller VG4D. Are the pistons the same size on the two? Are the Military verisons as valuable, less valuable or more valuable than the VG4D? Do all internal parts interchange between the two? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Piston sizes are the same unless one has been bored out. All internal parts will interchange. If I remember correctly, There was somewhere around 40 different crankshafts that would go into the VG4D series, which includes the M version. The VH4D had more if memory serves right. The Spec number is really what sets any of these apart. The ignition system was different on the MVG4D in that they could run in wet conditions better than their civilian counterpart.

One version had an extra carrier bearing out on the front of the crank, but that may have only been with the MV465D. I sold and serviced these wisconsin engines for 22 years, but I have been away from them for a while =)

The military version was more expensive initially, but I doubt that you'd get any more money out of one than the other, unless someone just wanted to say they had a military engine.
