I have a TE20 and when I put it under a load it will start to miss fire. If I give it more throttle you can hear it suck more air and gas but it doesn't accel. If I remove the dist cap and points plate to get access to the advance springs and spray them down with luber plate or some other oil it will run okay for a while but will start to act up again. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what my problem might be. The advance springs look clean and seem to be moving freely when I move them by hand but I can't figure out this little problem. If tractor is setting it runs fine and accel. great. Thanks for any help.

Check to make sure that you have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. If you don't, then check the orimary ignition circuit.

If you have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, check the timing and the advance mechanism. You'll need a timing light and a tach.

If thy're fine, then check the fuel system. Pukk the plug at the bottom of the carb and the fuels should run out CONTINUOUSLY, like a cow peein' on a flat rock. If it doesn't then you can have a clogged vent on the tank, a blocked filter or screen, a hung float( rap witha wooden block on the side of the carb) or a sediment filled fuel bowl inside the carb that restricts the float drop.

Do these checks systematically in the order I gave them and record what you find for future reference.

Have you checked the governor?

Haven't checked it yet. Just found out today that there is a rod that goes from dash panel to governor and I will see if that is still connected. So you think that the governor might be the problem? I was under the assumtion that a governor was for over throttle protection. Thanks for the tip, I'll keep you posted on the governor linkage.

Hand throttle runs to governor.. then governor runs to carb..

Could be sticky advance.. could be incorrect timing.. could be worn weak engine.. could be non responsive governor.

Just to expand a little more on my problem. If the tractor is just sitting and running it will accelerate fine but as soon as you start to put it to work by plowing or whatever, thats when it starts to act up.
