i revamped a farmall h recently, and put a rebuild kit in the carb with the exception of a float. it runs, but the choke has to be at least 3/4 of the way closed for it to run at all. i have tried adjusting the screws on the carb, but it didnt seem to have any effect. i tested it under a load to see if it would choke and starve for gas, but it ran like it was supposed to, just at 3/4 choke. could someone please help me with the problem and give me some tips.

I had the same problem. The manifold had slight warp and leaked at an intake port at the head. Took the manifold to macine shop and had it refaced.

Carb rebuild takes on many different meanings. After checking the others suggestion I wonder if you replaced the bushings? If not you can suck air around the bushing instead of gas. I'm sure you checked for manifold leaks with propane or either. This again sucks air instead of gas.

i have an h that i fought carb problems with for a while. like jdr said, check your fuel flow first. i would pull the fuel line where it goes in the carb first, see if good flow. that way you can see if its plugged from the tank. next, pull the line fitting out of the carb and see if the screen is plugged. next i would drop the carb bowl, chek the fuel flow coming thru the float, raise aand lower the float and watch fuel flow. check float to see if it is rubbing on the carb bowl, also check to see if it is hitting the bowl gasket. pull the main mix screw and blow it out with spray carb cleaner. be sure all the passages are open.

Red-You may try reposting this question on the Farmall board and get some better advice than I am capable of giving. Sounds like a fuel restriction problem to me. Check fuel flow to the carb drain plug at the bottom of carb. If steady flow of fuel is not available to the drain backtrack through fuel line and needle valve until You locate the restriction. Good Luck
