Pistons...advice required

Hi.I have just bought some used pistons & conrods plus liners for my IH TD9.They look OK ,but I need to know a few things:
1..How do I assess if a used piston is OK to re-use. 2...One liner has two very minor chips missing on the lower end.Otherwise in good order.Is it OK to use.?
3..The conrods are fitted to pistons,but the caps are separated.I can"t find any markings or numbers to pair them to their original conrods...is this a problem?

You need to measure the ID of the cylinder at 9 points. 3 points in a circle at top, middle and bottom. That will tell you if the cylinder is tapered and if it is egg shaped. Measure the thrust side of the piston at the top and the skirt. (it's the side with the wear).

If you don't have the tools for this and don't want to pay the bucks to have it checked. There is a way to see if it is trash or not. Carefully remove one compression ring (top ring). Put it in the cylinder and square it up by putting the piston in. Measure the end gap. Do that at top, mid and bottom. You don't have to take off all the rings, just use a ring compressor on the piston.

You also need to determine if the bushing for the piston pin is any good and if the big end is perfectly round. Diesels can get out of shape faster than gas engines from the extra torque.

those are some tough questions to ask without seeing the pistons and sleeves. your best bet would be to take the parts to a local engine builder or machine shop and they can look em over for ya.
