eight point socket question

I understand that folks use eight point sockets on square nuts and bolts though I have never tried. Will an eight point socket work on a conventional six point/side nut? It doesn't seem like it would but I know not...?? I'm getting cross eyed trying to sketch it on paper...never could draw. Thanks

I have a set of 1/2" drive Power Kraft 10 point sockets that I got for Christmas about 45 years ago. The same socket works on both hex and square of the same size. I saw a few years ago that McMaster Carr had sets of them available. The only problem with them is that they are too thick to fit in some places where a normal socket fits.

While there may possibly just a certain right size combination where an 8 pt socket might grip a certain sized hex nut, as you already noted they are for SQUARE NUTS N BOLTS and they do a good job. I use them on some of my thread taps.

6 point, or hex head nuts and bolts require a 6 or 12 point socket. Will not work on square head nuts and bolts.
