I'm soldering new brushes on my fields and new field bolt on an old starter. I have used an actylene torch in the past. But, I thought about using a soldering iron. Will a 300 watt iron work?

We used to use a "carbon arc stick" like used in a carbon arc torch. Clamp one wire from a 12 volt battery neg. to ground piece being soldered, and another wire from pos. to the stick.produces plenty of heat to solder or unsolder starter brushes. Good luck. doorman

I just wondered if a 300 watt iron would maintain the heat. I have soldered many with a torch. It can be done with a torch.
Just prepair it right.

300 watt will not do it and a tourch will not work either. The shops that rebuild starters and all use big irons to do that job. Most are 500-1500 watt jobs. My local guy will do the job for me for less then $5 so its worth the time and gas just to have him do it. By the way I got the watt number right from him and he said he uses ones from the 500 to the 1500 depending on what hes doing

A 300 watt instant heating soldering gun is a bit small, if that's what you are talking about.

A BIG old electric soldering iron that heats up a BIG copper tip works great, as well as a "soldering copper" that you heat up with a torch, and THAN apply to the material being soldered.
