Water pump on JD3020

I am just finishing up on an overhaul of a 3020. I put the water pump back on and added water and it started leaking. I took it off and put a straight edge accross it and everything looks fine. It has me stumped because it wasn't leaking before I did the overhaul. Any suggestions?

Suggestions? Find out WHERE it is leaking from. If the pump is leaking through the seal, internally, and coming out the weep-hole - then you need to rebuild the water pump. It is easy to do - in fact easier now than it was 20-30 years ago. Originally, the old style seal rode against the polished face on the impeller - so a rebuild usually required a new bearing assembly, seal, and new impeller. Now, a new-style seal is usually used that seals on the bearing shaft and not the impeller - so that cuts down on cost - and/or worrying about getting the tension right on the old spring-loaded seal against the impeller. Now - if your leak is gasket related ?? Then, as often stated in the old IT repair manuals, the problem is "self evident."

The leak is from the seal. I just can"t see where it is coming from. I am considering doing a double gasket, or using a silicone gasket maker in addition to the factory gasket.

Your not on the same page as the other guys, If the leak is at the PUMP SHAFT SEAL and leaking from the WEEP HOLE,you need to rebuild the pump by replacing the shaft/bearing and seal. If it is leaking at the gasket where the pump mounts to the engine,then you need to inspect for old gasket material remaining on the pump or engine,a damaged gasket or a warped/cracked/corroded pump housing. As the man said,the problem should be self evident depending on where the leak is located.

I do believe that I am on the right page, but not being clear. It is leaking between the pump and the head. (not out of the weep hole, or any other place on the pump.) I have cleaned off the gasket, and then put a straight edge against both surfaces to see if it is warped in anyway. It isn't warped. The gasket is in good condition also. That is why I have a problem. The problem is not self evident, that is why I posted this message in the first place.

OK palmyra,I understand now. Sounds like a thin layer of silicon gasket sealer on 1 side of the gasket is in order. Let the silicon rubber set up for 10 min before you install the pump so it is firm enough to extrude into any gaps in the sealing surface. Use care not to use too much sealer,as any excess that extrudes into the head can come loose and clog the radiator tubes. If any of the water pump mounting bolts extend into an open bottom hole in the head,coat the bolt threads with permatex gasket sealer or silicon rubber gasket sealer to prevent leaks past the bolt threads.

Did you clean the bolt threads up on a wire wheel? Did you chase the threads with a tap before you reinstalled the pump?Could be you are getting a false torque on one or more of the bolts.Silicone won't fix that if that is the problem.
