I have 1947 9n that has the 12 volt conversion. I was using it today to grade my driveway. I went to start it and the starter just whined and did not engage the flywheel. I figured that the drive unit was stuck, so I took the starter off. I have never done this before. When I pulled the starter out of the engine, I saw what appeared to be a large spring.. just before it dropped to the bottom of the crankcase and out of my view. What was this spring? Was it part of the drive unit to the starter or something else? It would seem to me that the spring was broken and was supposed to engage the starter to the flywheel.. and this is why the starter only whined when I attempted to start the tractor? How do I go about fixing this? I am guessing that I can fish the spring out of the crank case through the oil drain, but how do I replace it? Am I going to have to disassemble the engine?

Yes it just fell to the bottom of your clutch cavity(no oil in there). It won"t hurt anything. If you can fish it- fine, if not-oh well. I"ve had a Bendix spring break on me to. I don"t think it"s that uncommon on old, worn starters. There is a newer better design Bendix avaialble, but either will work and is a fairly simple fix. You can put it on or have a starter shop do it.

Well first off there never was a 1947 9N built. If it is in fact a 1947 then its a 2N almost the same but not the same. What happened is you lost the keeper for the bendex on it and its fallen down insdie the bellhouseing area. Go buy your self a new bendex and put it on. Don't worry about the parts that fell in to the bell houseing theres extra room in it just for starter parts like those.
9N where built from 1939 to 1942, then in 42 the 2N was built till 1947, then they started building the 8N and it ran from 1948 to 1952

Maybe if you had an extension magnet you could fish it out? Dave

It is NOT in your crankcase! Do not drain your oil and expect to find it there. Use a magnet and fish it out. Also, you need to get a manual for the tractor. Consider it a "must read".
