I posted a while back regarding my 93 Suburaban running the battery dead after 2 days. My old auto. analyzer shows 5k. on the Ohms scale when connected in line with battery cables. 5k. is actually vey low on the scale (opp. end of scale is 500k.) While hooked up, I pulled EVERY fuse in dash and none made needle drop to 0. I unhooked all connections to alternator as someone suggested that as a possibility.-still read 5k. Someone mentioned an airconditioning module as a possibility-didnt really know what to look for. MY question is: is 5k. acceptable? I tried radio and anything I thought had a memory circuit. Should I charge up battery and monitor it without being hooked up? Could a battery (3 years old) discharge itself? Looking for other solutions. THanks fellas. Mark

Thanks fellas, greatly appreciated.
Heres what I have. Unhooked both battery connections and had 9.5 Ohms resistance. Unbolted power to alternator and Ohms increased rapidly. Grounded power supply to alternator and Ohms went to zero. Can an alternator be repaired? I believe there is a diode that causes problem. Thanks Mark

I don't think the Ohmmeter test is of much use, on a modern vehicle with solid-state electronics, as the electronic circuitry will act differently when chacked with the 1.5 Volt powered Ohmmeter, vs. being powered by the "12-Volt" battery.

Get a test light with the lowest wattage bulb you can find, and connect it in series, between one of the battery cables and the battery.

The brighter the test light glows, the more power is being drained somewhere.

Pull fuses, and even disconnect the alternator, until the light gets very dim, or goes out, and you should be able to track down the problem.

If the resistance really is 5K ohms, the current draw at 12 volts would be about 2.4 milliAmps, which would discharge the battery slower than it self discharges. It would literally take months to discharge a battery at that rate.

What do you mean by "connected in line with the battery cables"? In order to measure resistance, at least one battery cable would need to be disconnected at the battery & the ohmmeter leads connected to the two battery cables.

I'd suggest charging the battery, leaving it disconnected for a few days, & see if it discharges. You might also check the top of the battery & make sure its clean. If there's a bunch of corrosion & such on the top of the battery it can provide a current path between the battery terminals. Assuming its a maintenance free battery, you shouldn't have to worry about getting the soda into the cells.

It is entirely possible for a 3 year old battery to be bad. We had a '99 Mercury Villager a while back we bought new (big mistake, but that's another story), and the OEM battery lasted less than two years.
