Let me clarify a little. If I overhaul this 9N/2N (not sure which because serial # is unreadable), I"d like to make whatever (within reason) upgrades to get more horsies. All replies are appreciated.

On the faly head Ford engines like on the 9N, 2N and 8N theres little of nothing you can realy do to get more power. One reason the 8N is rated at a high HP is becuase of them haveing one more gear that the 9N/2N don't have. DON'T mill or shave the head any on them or your asking for big problems. Or in other words the only way you can really get more power out of one is to replace the engine with something like the funk convertion etc.

Old - gearing has NOTHING to do with increasing horsepower. Gearing only changes how that horsepower is applied. If you put a 9N engine on an 8N transmission - you still would have a lower horsepower tractor than if an 8N engine was on there.

As Sounder says - the horsepower increase was due to a higher compression (6.1 on a 9N/2N and very early 8Ns, and 6.5 on later 8Ns)- I am fairly sure it was from a redesigned head to allow better flow with less piston clearance. Sherman made a high compression aluminum head that got it up to 7.5 compression on the 9N/2N/ and front mount 8Ns!

HTH,
Dan

Dan, I have to agree and also disagree on the HP thing. Yes with the high compression it the 8N engine will have a little more HP but also the tanny makes a differance also. For instance, an Allis B and Allis C both have the very same engine but, not the same rear end/tranny and the C has more HP then the B because of the tranny. Or should I say it this way the C puts more pwoer to the ground even with the same HP engine as the B. It all depends on where you are takeing the HP reading from and how your doing it.

The allis C has a higher RPM than a B. If there is a difference trannys gearing it isn't enough to really make note of. Our C and B are about the same speedwise.
