OT - Headliner adhesive help

The headliner in my suburban has released from the foam backing. I tried some of the spray adhesive for upholstery without success and now see in the fine print on the can that it should not be used on headliners...

Any suggestions?

In my beater car I took some of those curly pins that are used to hold the armrest covers on couchs and screwed them into the roof. They worked way better than thumbtacks and stick pins. Total cost, less than $2.....

We use a 3-M adheasive used in automotive trim I belive it is Super 79 by 3-M,Check with 3-M website we also use Super77 in a pinch...I will for warn you they are not cheap...$25-30 bucks a 18 oz can.....shawn

I've had a couple of those recovered. The old adhesive must be scraped from hard panel. This is the hardest part of the job. J.C. Whitney or your local upholsterer should have, or be able to get the liner & adhesive for you.

I have a mid-80's Sub and a Blazer with the same problem. The Sub has about a zillion stick pins holding the fabric to the cardboard, per a previous owner.

The foam backing has deteriorated, so the glue has nothing but crumbly foam to stick to.

I have been planning to take down the headliners, scrape the cloth and foam backing off of the cardboard backing, and then glue on new headliner material.

I think Whitney has the material, and I'm sure there are other sources.

I doubt if there is any fix, other than getting rid of the deteriorated foam.

Upholstery shop man says they will install a new one for $100. Hard to beat that.

Best way to fix it is: Take down the head-liner, scrape off all rubber and other detritus, clean well, paint it, and put it back up!! Or buy a new one!! I tried to fix some, but the only way to do it is as above!
