What did the original "41 A" have for threads to hold on the shift knob? and then anyone know where I can get them. Local IH dealer has knob but does not look like any original I have seen. I'm guessing it is either 1/2 x 13 or 1/2 x 20 ?

My 1940 Farmall H does not have threads on the shifter rod. The rod is complete and not broken so I know it never had threads. I bought a rubber knob from OEM. Boil the rubber knob for a few minutes then use a hammer to drive it on the rod. Once cool it does not come off. The shape of mine is pear shaped and is soft black rubber. It was about $5.00.

I believe the shifter does not have threads. I am pretty sure that the rubber shift knob just slips onto the shifter. The steel shift balls used in 1944(?)-1947(?) obviously were threaded, but I don't recall threads for the rubber knob. A 1941 model would not have the steel knob as the '42 models were in production at the time of Pearl Harbor. I think the steel knob appeared in 1944, but not sure. I have a '47 B with the steel knob. Suggest you check Guy Faye's "Originality Guide" for confirmation.

In the book it shows 1 painted version and 1 un-painted version. The one that the IH dealer had was round like a ball and not pear shaped. So thats what I am looking for. Both of the ones in the book do have the same shape however.

Problem I have is .... there is no threads.. That part broke off. I can re thread but need an orginal to know what size tread (13 or 20)??

Would be nice to have a brass one because I am trimming the tractor in brass. Steering shaft, starter, generator, etc. Have checked all the local yards but cat find what I see in Guys Pic books. If anyone has a brass I would like to here from you!!! Thanks Keith

If you don't have a thread gage, it should be possible to count how many threads are in an inch of shaft, using any good ruler, but a machinist rule would be handy. If the choice is between 13 and 20, it should be possible to eyeball it with any ruler.

Keith, During the war, shifter knobs come in metal (Brass?) due to the shortage of rubber that was going into the war effort. Check around salvage yards for an original metal knob and should have the correct threads for your lever.//FB
