wood plank or metal plate for foot step

I'm making a foot step for a tractor, and had thought about metal plate for the step.. but figured it might get too slippery... Then had an idea about using a piece of wood plank. Plank coule be unbolted and replaces if it rotted.. etc... And should be more non-skid than the metal.. even diamond plate... I've slipped on diamond plate way too many times to think about using it as a step...

Can you get your hands on any expanded metal? Made just for that purpose. Lot of utiliy trucks and such use it. Sort of has a strechted <> shape to it with barbs on top for traction.

I have seen it.. but can't find any locally, and am trying to do this on the cheap. ( looks kinda like the metal use in outside stairs.. etc.. good stuff.. if i could find it cheap.. )

What size do you need... I have some scraps laying around you could have for little more than the cost of shipping.

Does it need to be really HEAVY, so as to be more or less self-supporting, with minimum framing around it, or will it be well supported, so lighter stuff would do?

i could do either. If I go with a light weight metal, i can back with angle iron and 1/4 plate for support. if i go with a wood plank.. i may just use angle iron lips.. etc.

At lunch I'm going to head by the local auction and check their 'burned and junk' rows and see if i can perhaps pull a few parts.. or see if there is any non-recycled metal that may be available cheaply.

If that don't pan out... I may just go wood.. unless you guys think that wood is not a good option.

I think the plank will be VERY slippery when its wet outside, or if there is some buildup of dry grass on the step. A coating of walkway paint (with grit) or one of those adhesive non-slip stair tread covers would help.

That's another idea.

i stopep dby TSC at lunch and say those self adhesive step pads.. I may go ahead and use 1/4 plate, and some of theose tread pads.

If you have any leftover 3 tab roofing laying around, works good for no-skid on wood and easy to replace when worn.
