I have a MF 65 (1960) that dies out when it warms up and when I have the PTO working with a finishing mower. It will start just fine. Engine sounds OK. The PTO will engage and operate OK for five to ten minutes and then the engine will start to sputter and quit. If I can disengage the PTO quick enough - the engine will return to running smoothly. I have replaced the rotor, plugs, rebuilt the carberator, points, condensor, distributor cap, and timed it. lat night I noticed a plug wire that was bad and repaired it and tried it again - but no luck. It ran good for five minutes and quit. A couple of nights ago - I did notice that the rotor (which is new) seemed hot to the touch. Additionally, it does not seem to be charging the battery very well. I would greatly appreciate any help you might be able to offer.

Hi Jim, did you resolve the problem eventually? I have a MF round about 1960 model (runs on Paraffin and Petrol) doing exactly the same, it starts well then after 5 min it start to miss/shudder and even backfire then when you put it under any load whatsoever it dies down only to start again perfectly after 10 to 15 min. I redid the entire carb, top gasket, distributor condenser, coil with little improvement. Someone told me however that it is the distributor itself and that I should replace it, apparently due to wear and tear it starts to get a minute amount of play on the distributor shaft and it is this play that causes the problem. What was your experience?

I had similar problems on an Oliver 550 and did the same as you. Things improved after I put in a new coil, but after a few more hours it returned to the old habits. Turns out even new coils go bad. I again replaced the coil and problem solved. I now use a vibration free coil that is a solid unit (no oil inside) and its performing the way it should.
