Phosphorus acid good for primer?

I have a old hay baler that I want to paint,if I knock off the loose paint,rust grease,etc. and then spray it with ospho or phosphorus acid will that be a good primer? How would that work on the surfaces that already have some paint left? I just want to paint it just to make it look better not for show or taking apart and painting every piece separate. Thanks for any advice

I have had years of exposure to use of Ospho.All of which has been very satisfactory, however if used on areas of painted as well as rusted you should flush with water.The Ospho will remove all oxide from the paint but be prepaired to see a white powder over previous rusted areas.There is no problem with rust occuring before drying because the film laid down by the acid will probably hold for weeks if not months.All of my experience has been on ocean going ships and can say that this stuff is used very heavily.You can also cut with water 50 percent and acheive good results.If this were my project I would still use a thin coat of primer before the color coat just to have a more finished surface.New paint will not stick to the old painted surface unless residue is washed off. You can also clean rusted nuts and bolts or tools and etc., by soaking in a solution but exercise a watchful eye and remove from solution when rust is gone then flush with water.

Thanks for that good info. You say to wash it off do you mean with a water hose or steam cleaner or a scrub brush by hand and when should it be washed off, let it dry for a day or right after spraying it with the ospho? Thanks

I just looked back at this post sorry for the delay.I guess I wasn't clear enough.It is not important to wash it off if no painted surface is involved.However paint will not stick to the acidized Old paint in the treated area.You will see what I mean once you use this product.You can water wash the entire surface once the acid has dried..Then when water is dry you will find a white film in spots.You can paint over that if you like but I prefer to wipe or any soft brush cause it seems to give a smoother painted surface.Dry time of the acid in a warm area is very short.A 24 hour wait is not needed.Water hose is ok and soft brush ls all that you will need.I have often seen this stuff stand up against rusting in the presence of sea water for several weeks,however it should then be washed down with soap and water then rinsed with clear water. This stuff is wonderful to remove oxide from old paint. Seems to bring back the old shine.
