I'm just blowin' off steam...I'd really enjoy working on my 2 tractors more if I didn't get stopped cold in my plans by stuck bolts!! I mean I'm workin' along fine and then WHAM...get one that won't budge no matter how long I've been bangin' and sprayin!....anybody else want to chime in? I know I need more patience...but man, it's frustrating!

I am an impatient man, like you, and the only thing I will tell you is that my best friend in macanical is the acetylen torch ...Also a realy strong impact wrench is a good companion.

Type A Automatic Transmission Fluid often does the trick. Especially good with Hydralic fittings.

Every time I get a stuck bolt, I think about how I should put things back together so I minimize the bolt sticking the next time, i.e., I've come to use a lot of anti-seize spray on things I don't want to fool around with next time.

Also, keeping equipment out of the elements helps. I have more problems with the implements that have been pasture ornaments for years.

Also try heating the area around the bolt. One time I had to get an 8 foot metal pipe with a craftsman 1 inch drive socket to get a bolt out. Not to mention that I also had to stand on and jump up and down on the end of the pipe to get the bolt to turn. Use a lot of WD-40 and keep spraying!! Good luck.

If the PB Blaster and beer don't work and the bolts are in a position where you can, heat them a little. get them just red enough to say they are red. that should break the rust loose and they will come right out. No telling how many exhaust studs we have gotten out like that....

If that fails go looking for the dynamite:)

That's where beer comes in handy. You get to workin' on the thing and come across a stuck bolt, you just hit it with PB Blaster, tap it a couple times with a hammer, if it don't come out, you open a beer and kick back. Then come back the next day and try it again. It might take several beers, but eventually you'll get it out. Probably.

I just successfully removed the cap on the radiator drain for my '53 Super M. I was sweating that one 'cause radiators are pretty thin. After a week of hitting it with PB Blaster and firm raps with a light hammer, I put a pipe wrench on it, and off it came. Patience is probably the most important ingredient - it took 50 years to rust up, it ain't going to come off in a few minutes.

I have just completed a ground up part by part restoration of a John Deere LA. During the whole restoration process I have learned more than I really wanted to know about stuck bolts and nuts. I have had the best luck using a product called Aerokroil put out by Kano Labs. This plus a lot of patience has worked quite well. Hope this helps.

Patience, that's the key. I finally got a stuck capscrew out that had been vexing me for 3 weeks. Finally got the other 3 in the pattern out so I could wiggle the two parts a bit. Then a couple sharp raps with a punch and ball-pein hammer and it finally broke loose. Wasn't rusted, just tight, and the fellow who installed it rounded out the allen recess so I couldn't get much of a bite.

Cary-

There's a little used process called tractor dipping. I drained my pond last year and filled it with used motor oil. Then lowered my tractor into it until it was completely submersed. Usually about 2 weeks does it. If you can get ahold of it again somehow, you lift it out and let it drain off (just a little). Then you attempt to loosen the stuck bolts. If the bolts are still stuck, you can either re-dip or get another tractor, or weld all of the exposed nuts and bolts together and sell it to somebody else :)

I might try that. My tractor is currently in my garage, I bet I could seal off the doors and windows, line the walls with plastic and fill the garage with oil to accomplish pretty much the same thing. I would install a spigot near the floorline to drain off the oil after a couple weeks. Thanks for the tip!

Havnt read all the followups but what works the best is an Acetlyn torch-heat red hot-work on it- heat again if neccessary- studs or bolts broke off-an old timer showed me a trick-heat bolt red hot-then just cool the bolt- do about three times and it works,-sometimes necessary to drill out- use a left hand drill and make dam sure you get in the center the first time. Maybe use a couple drill sizes.
