We have just purchased an old Farmall C tractor and having trouble with the belt not turning the alternator I believe. I am trying to find out if there is an adjustment to tighten that belt or if we just need to replace it.

Yuo adjust the belt by moving the fan up and down it is on a slide the nut can not turn . A real PIA some times.

Farmall used one of those (well I better not say) adjustments. There is a jamb nut and screw in the water pump pulley.Remove both and screw the pulley halves together until the belt is tight. To do it right, you need the proper spanner wrench. Most people use a punch and a hammer.Lots of PB Blaster first.TAP_TAP_TAP.Replace the screw making sure it is located in one of the groves cut in the pulley half.Careful ,don't twist off the screw while tightening the jamb nut.

Sounds similar to what AC used- pressed steel pulley halves with a slide pattern, held by two little bolts. On unstyled tractors it was used to tighten the belt. With a generator, it was still used to change fan speed.

Might not be a belt problem- could be the pulley on the alternator is worn out or too wide for the belt. Belt might be bottomed out in the groove and not get enough traction. Should grip the sides as well.
