When I disassembled the flyweight plate under the points I found a broken spring. The replacement spring set I received has 2 springs of different diameters. They are both the same length, so I"m at a loss as to why they are different and next does it matter which weight they belong to?

There was a change in the springs way back and also they made a chage in the one plate in the dist. and i would have to have the dist # and get into the books to see what the adv. curve is for your dist. Also the work should be done on a dist machine to set the curve . Problem is today is that there are not alot of them old machines left and not many of use left that know how to do the work . I do not even try to remember the specs. and relie on the books and the strobe . They found out that tomuch advance will hurt ya on the hard pull and they layed back total advance for better bottom end performance.

Regardless of what springs you use,you need to hook up a tach and dial advance type timing light to get your advance where you want it at the rpms that you want and the total advance not to exceed what you want.(probably some sort of stop post in the dist.)Hopefully you have these specs from someone who has already done the experimenting on a dyno or in the field. Just throwing in diff. weights or weaker springs is a bad idea.You will never know where you are good or bad!

The advance curve of distributors is set by various combinations of springs and weights.

Likely, both of your weights are the same, and the manufacturer got the desired advance curve by using two different springs.

It will not matter on which weight the springs are installed.
