Painting grease zerts

When doing a restoration of a piece of equipment, should you paint the grease zerts or not. If you do, is their any problem with greasing them the first time becuase of the paint? Haven't been around many pieces of new equipment to know if they are painted from the factory or not.

get a package of vacuum plugs at the auto part store they have all sizes just pop one over each grease fitting and paint away.youcan leave the plug on after and have the matching color or take off to have the contrast(also keeps fitting looking new)

Most manufacturers bulk paint.. zerks and all. i find i have to use my knife to chip the paint fromt he tip before it will take grease.. no biggie.

If I am repainting, I always leave a dab of grease on the zerk head.. after paint cure.. whipe it off with a paper towel.. and you have a nice clean zerk head.. ( i always wipe my zerks off before greasing anyway.. )

Hi

I work for a small mfg company and we mfg green house equitment and we get our cart powder coated painted and we put the zerks in first and then they are powder coated and for me to grease them i have to use my jack knife to move the ball in the zerk to get it to take grease. The balls stick in the paint.

I have never seen a piece of equipment that did not have painted zerks from the factory. Only time they are not painted is when you change one and it doesn't look original anymore. And no, it does not affect the ability to grease it. Grease guns have thousands of psi to put the grease in and a little skin of paint wont stop that. Paint em with the paint job.

The way I do it is this. I put a dab of grease on the top of the zirks befoe I paint them. That way the paint doesn't stick to the area that the grease goes in but does the other part of the zirk

Personally I like the look of a restored tractor that has all new unpainted grease zerks, It may not be 100% original, but it shows contrast and detail, I dont think that an unpainted zerk that costs a few cents is going to make or break the value of a tractor, I just think it will show that you went the extra mile to replace parts that were only a few cents, Just my opinion

Hi! I prefer on a detailed restoration to leave the zerks out until painted. The new gold or silver cadnium finish on them {zerks} really breaks up a big solid color area. That is just my preference. I'm certain that they were painted from factory. Just my opinion! Good luck with what ever you do!! Brian

Your post used the word "Restoring". Just put new ones in and paint them with a detail brush if you want them colored. Hard to tell which way a factory opted to do them.My guess is they painted them. Most assembeled as much as they could before painting.
