t020 ferguson tractor starter problems

I recently bought a ferguson t020. It did not have a starter with it. I ordered a new one from e-bay and the problem I am having is that as long as I have the tractor apart (transmission seperate from the engin) the starter will turn the flywheel freely, once I put the tractor back together the starter will not turn the flywheel it seems to lock up. Has anyone had this problem and if so how did you fix it. I was also told that the starter would kick itself out once the tractor started and I pulled the tractor off to get it started and the starter never kicked out. I have already burnt up one starter and chewed up a starter drive trying to get it to kick out.
