Super C Starter Problems

From your description it sounds like the starter drive pinion (or "bendix") is badly worn. This is a fairly normal occurance - even on 6 volts. Also probably the flywheel ring gear is somewhat worn. However the ring gear usually wears more slowly than the starter drive. Consequntly often just replacing the starter drive will solve the problem.

A new starter drive will run around $40, and is not difficult to install. (A new ring gear is also about $40 - however you need to split the tractor to install that...)

So I'd first remove the starter and look at the condition of the drive pinion and the ring gear teeth, then go from there.

Should you however decide to replace the whole starter and not just the drive, my recommendation is to have your existing one rebuilt at your local alternator shop. It'll cost less than a reman, and will be every bit as good. (Also you will be supporting a local businessman...) Be sure to tell 'em your running it on 12 volts now so they can install the appropriate field windings, etc.

An inspection of the flywheel teeth and starter drive ought to find the problem, but if its gotta be totally rebuilt anyway (may just need a new drive remember) I would have it rebuilt with fields and armature for 12 volt operation, or price shop for a rebuilt 12 v unit?

When you say it makes noise but doesnt turn the motor Im guessing its trying to turn but the drive or flywheel doesent allow it so Im NOT suspecting any starter switch problem for now at least. A bad switch might cause no cranking or slowwwww w cranking if its all burned n carboned up.
