diesel Injection pump install

My brother took the pump off of his Ford 4000 diesel tractor, it was indeed bad, but he didn't know anything about the pump being set to time. We are getting a new one today. Question is... the engine has not been turned over, how do we go about installing the new one in correct time?
I have read some posts concerning this topic but with the engine not being turned is it a matter of installing it possibly 180 degrees off or how about the rotational timing setting? Thanks for any help as the grass is growing as I type!

Which 4000 and which pump? Early - before 1964 4000 is totally different than the later ones.
Early has the Roosamaster distributor-type injection pump. With that, the drive-shaft for the pump can go in two ways - but the dimple on one side of the shaft corresponds to a dimple inside the pump where the shafts plugs into. Also - the pump has timing marks that tell you when it's in fire position for number one cylinder. Tell me what tractor and which pump you have, and I'll explain a little further.

Well i am not well versed in Fords so the vary best advice i can give ya is Get a BOOK like and I T manual and read it as it will cover the removal and replacement of said pump along with other stuff that you always wanted to know but were affarid to ask.

That book can be bought at just about any TSC or fram equipment dealer across the country now i am not being a smart arrs here i am tryen to help you out . When you get the new ( rebuilt ) What ever pump it should be preset for TDC but as to where the engine is to be set is another thing or if your brother screwed up when he just pulled it off with out falloweing the proper removal . Now like i said before i am by know means and expert on the fords but i am on the I H's and even on them each engine has it's quarks and you have to fallow the removal steps as i have been out tomany times on service calls to farms where the guy just pulled the pump and fought for days tryen to get it to run and many of times the timming gear jumped and you could not get it back into time with out tearing the ft. off the engine to reset all the timming gears . Now may be there is a couple guys on the FoRD board that know the ins and out of the Ford as well as i know the I H's but ya can not beat the book and yes I T manuals are not as good as a factory manual but they have worked well for me over the years. And you will find that it is the best 30 bucks you ever spent .
