1st of all "it's my buddy and I/myself, "not me and my buddy".
2nd you still are not saving any money paying for that more expensive diesel fuel.
2-1/2 your buddy didn't have to pay for the diesel option
3rd start saving up for a new set of injectors and other Duramax engine work which will be required just after the warranty expires. 4th why are you two racing on hills, particularly while pulling trailers?

heres the math mark has a 6. liter chevy he pulls 12000 lbs camper to myrtle beach mitch with a duramax pulls a 14000lbs camper to myrtle beach .mark fills his truck up because its on e and i still have a half a tank so i filled up 1/2 as many times as he did . diesel is just a dollar more a gallon so i thunk im still saving a buck and halve easy.[/quote]
Your buddy with the gasser is burning 20 gallons for your 15 gallons. Where is the savings when gas is $3.00 and diesel is $4.00? You are both paying the same totoal dollars for fuel on the trip. You get to pay for the $10,000 diesel option, maintain those 20,000psi common rail injectors and particulate filter.
It's 2008 and gas vs. diesel, not 1973 and gas vs. diesel.

WELL ME AND MY BUDDY USE TO HANE THE SAME SIZE FUEL TANKS WHEN WE WERE CALCULATING THE GALLONS BUT HE GOT AN ADITTIONAL TANK SO HE COULD RUN WITH ME BUT I STILL HAVE TO SLOW DOWN ON GRADES FOR HIM TO KEEP UP THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IN FUEL MILEAGE IS THE DIESEL RUNS 2000 RPMS WITH LOAD AT 65 MILE AN HOUR THE GAS RUNS 3500 RPMS WITH ITS PAY LOAD AND ABOVE 4000 UP GRADES DISEL JUST DOESNT SEE MUCH OVER 3000 AT ALL . NEVER GOT ANY MILEAGE OR LONG SERVICE OUT OF ANYTHING I HAD TO WIND THE SNOTT OUT OF TO GET THE JOB DONE. 03 DURAMAX HAS 100000+ MILES ON IT CHANGE FUEL FILTER EVERY 30000 HADNT BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR A FUEL PROMPLEM AS OF YET GOT ITS FIRST SET OF BRAKES AT 92000 TRANSMISSION FILTER GETS A NEW ON SCREWED ON EVERY 50000 NO PROMBLEMS WITH THE ALLISON TO DATE.

You have to be kidding, you are calculating fuel mileage from the tank gauge instead of actually measuring the gallons used? The tank guage on my 2003 GMC with a 96L tank goes from run out of fuel dry to exactly 1/2 by adding 25L of fuel.
Unless you only plough snow or only haul a 16,000lb trailer 40,000 miles a year. The diesel will break even when it's 5+ years old. By now you are going to be paying huge for a new particulate filter and replacement of the common rail injectors. The rest of the truck and drivetrian will be getting ready for major service as well.
If you are the typical 99% of diesel pickup truck drivers. That diesel will never, ever, ever break even let lone pay for it's self. Maybe if you are accidentally filling the truck tank with no tax farm fuel, then in 7-10 years and 150,000 miles.
If you are going to filling up with farm fuel then you may as well purchase a gasser and run farm fuel in it. Still cheaper than diesel.
Diesel pickups are 99% about ego, not dollars and cents savings.

 i disagree we did the math on the entire trip he still got miles less on a gallon than i did and his fuel bill was more .theres a sying thats a a model ford and a tank fuel of gas will get you ? if you have enough money left for a nice dinner shell treat you right on long trips mine gats a good dinner because im fueling up half the time the gassers are and even with a set down dinner and some activity after dinner still getting there ahead of the gasser who cant pass up a fuel station.

Do the math and run a spell check.
The FUEL mileage difference between a gasser and a diesel does not even break even with $3.00 gasoline and $4.00 diesel.
Then there is the cost of the new truck which will never be recovered. There is now way to "save money" by trading. The cheapest per mile is to drive your existing truck until it get expensive to repair. Then purchase a 1-2 yr old truck that somebody can't afford to pay for. Or has been a leaser.

03 DURAMAX 14000 LBS BEHIND IT 6% GRADES GETS 9 MILES TO A GALLON FLAT INTERSTATE 13 BOTH MILEAGES ARE AT 75 TO 80 MILE AN HOUR . MIGHT DO BETTER IF I SLOWED DOWN BUT IM IN A HURRY ALWAYS . I TAKE THE CAMPER OFF THE FIFTH WHEEL AND BLOW THE DOORS OF THEM GT MUSTANGS BUT THAT DONT HELP MILEAGE EITHER . GET 21 JUST DRIVING AROUND IN STAGE 3 OF THE CHIP. ITS A BLAST TO DRIVE ALWAys a fan of torque.

It only as 4000 miles. A friend has one with a chip says he is getting 19 or 20 enpty. It may not get the best fuel milage but at least you can talk to some one with you. AR

I can tell you that my 07 duramax is getting better mileage all the time. The first trip I took with the gooseneck trailer I got 9.8 empty on the interstate and around 8.5 with a Kinze 6rn with innerplants. I"m now getting around 9.8 with a 7000lbs tractor and around 11 empty. My trailer is a 30ft dual wheel tandem axle. On a long trip with just the pickup I got 19.5 with the cruise set on 68mph. Mine only has 15,000 miles on it so I"m hoping I can get a little better yet.

The new LMM's with the DPF emmissions are harder on fuel then the earlier models. You might get better milage then your 6.0 but not enough to pay the extra bucks at time of purchase and at the pump. I have a 07 one ton 6.0 and a 08 dmax 1 ton. They are identical. I use them for plowing and sanding. The dmax gets a little better milage. The big diffrence is the power. That dmax would absoulty pull the gasser in half. The power combo of the dmax and allison can not be beat. It comes down to what you want. If you are gonna pull heavy stuff get a dmax. The pulling power is super!!!

I also have a 03 duramax 6 speed manual it gets 18 around town, 22 highway, we are going to sell the 6.0 and get another duramax, Just driving to college and back 4 days a week i used $150 in gas when it was less expensive. Just my .20 cents worth. But everyones opinion is diffrent.

I have a "05 2500 LLY. I get 18 ave. on the highway empty. With the empty gooseneck (27" 20000#)I get about 13 mpg. Loaded - who cares - better off to not even look at $4.05 per gal. I had a "02 2500 LB6 before this one and it got 20 mpg easily so I"m a little dissapointed with the new one. This should be its own post but has anyone found a way to get more mpg"s out of these trucks without spending a fortune?

i've been told that you should get 12-18 loaded, and 20-24 empty driving conservatively....highway miles.....going from kansas to michigan.....my uncle went out empty with a trailer, and came back loaded with a JD 4320 back (about 12000lbs). hope this helps....its an 02 or 03 dually.
