I've heard the terms top cutting and front cutting.. they sound pretty self explanatory. Is it feasable for an individual to cut his own tires with a disc grinder, and if so, how long would it take and how should he go about it? I have a set of 38" tires for my M with about 90% tread on them.

yes on the back is a jig so that all cuts are the same. evey type tire has to have it own jig. differt makes take different jigs also, this is a special made tire cutting machine. not to many of them around. i got it from a guy who had it special made. there a lot more to this machine then is showing in the pic. hard to explane excatly how it works. but does a real good job. can also do v cut. using a long bar short bar tire.

40 hrs! Holy Crap! That's alot of rubber to chew off. Do you have a pattern of some sort that you lay on the tire lug to get each lug as close as possible?

Cheers!

Sid

My first pair of tires I ever cut, at the time, they were the only tires I had so I took my time, 8hrs a day, was a very hard casing, bars like concrete,,, But shaped them with a 7 inch dresser wheel, then took the 4 inch finish wheel and cut the front lugs out, then after a few runs, seen where they were gripping onthe bar on the dirt, and cut a little more to get a good bar on the ground. 4 inch grinder was the time consumtion, but did a good job. Best pair of sand tires I ever seen. Chad

You can cut them with a grinder but believe me it is one of the nastiest jobs you will ever do. Not to mention it is a pretty good workout.

These tungsten carbide rubber grinding wheels will do a nicer job a lot quicker.

If you have 90% tread, its gonna take a lot more than 4 hrs per tire to do it right.

I had 40 hours in this pair of 15.5X38's!! They do seem to grip well, even in sand. ChadS
