I was looking for some input from all you JD G pullers.I'm building my 48 G wondering the best set up to go with.I want to pull 100ft stoneboat with a 6ft chain. I would like to go with.125 over with high compresson pistons. Is that much better that stock 6.12 tall pistons.Should I have my stock cam ground or a 70 cam done.I took .250 off the head.should I just gasket match or do some port and polishing. What type of air filter set works with a built engine. Thanks for all your help

I would go .125 because if you have to go back inside you can re-sleeve it and it will cost less than boring and buying new pistons. Besides a little may be all you need to win at the pulles.

Didn't have the cam in my G ground, but Berry's did my 720D, that cost approx $140, with the lifters surfaced. Not sure if a gas cam would be less, on a diesel cam they also grind the injection pump lobes.

I've got nothing but good things to say about Hinrich's. Reasonably priced, quick, the way to go. As for pistons, you may as well go with the .125 over, its gonna cost pretty much the same for pistons and boring whether you go .045 or .125, so even if its only a little bit more power, you might as well do it since your there and it'll cost the same.
As for cam, Berry's is a good choice. Call them and tell them what you've done/planning to do for a motor, what kind of RPMs you want it to run at. Berry Cams, Lester Prairie MN, 320-395-2377

As for the head, get in there with a grinder and feather the eyebrows back, it will breathe a lot better.

Chris, what size do you want? Can get you some +0.060 - weigh about 4 pounds each. [email protected]

Shouldn't need to go .125 right away. Go .045 or .090, the power increase will not be that much, and if you should need to bore again you still have some room to go.

Send out the cam to a good cam grinder, have them grind it for stock RPM. Berry Cams in MN is a good one. 70 cam is the same specs as a late G.
If you have already cut the head that much all you should need is a good valve job and port match the manifold.

Have dynoed with the oil bath then switched to a large K&N elbowed off the carb and saw no power increase.

With .090 over M&W's, stock cam, head shaved down to the eyebrows, good valve job, some carb work, and oil bath you can have a 58-60hp G.
