Real difference between 450 and M head?

I'm just starting to clean up an M for pulling. Hopefully this season. Have a source for a rebuilt gas 450 head. Was wondering if it is worth purchasing to replace my stock m head. I hear a lot of talk about the 450 lp head, this is just gas. Are the valves bigger? Will a stock M manifold bolt up to it?

Thanks

We just cced my 450 gas head and it is 180 cc combustion chamber . Any 450 head will require a 450 valve cover or you will be welding in a fitting so that it will hook to your air cleaner .

The tube that runs accross the top of your 8060 head just above the rockers " Is Not a Oil line " it is part of the crank case venting system . The 450 heads don"t have the threaded boss on the back side of the head for this tube to be used .

The 450 s just cut that tube off about 6 " in and leave it open [ from the front of the head ] That is why there is a welded in fitting in the valve cover . Just get the correct valve cover and be done with it .

I ran my 450 head last year on my super M with great results . I also bought the 450 LP manifold to go with it, it is a divorced design manifold . [ Meaning the intake and exhaust do not touch so the intake charge is not being heated by the exhaust ].

Spend you money on the head that is ware the power is made. Mine was ported and flow benched the flow improvement is a giant compared to stock head and stock 450 head .

Depending on what head you have, if it is a distillate head definitley go to something else. I have not heard what the cumbustion chamber cc's of an 8060 head is, a 450 gas head with gasket is around 180 cc's, a 450 LP with gasket is around 140 cc's. This means that on a 4" x 5-1/4" stock size motor your static compression with a gas head would be 7/1 a LP head will raise it to 8.7/1, thats a big increase in compression!

Well Red, In a nutshell the 450 head not only has more compression, it has better flow as well.
Will bolt right up.

The M manifold will bolt right up and the 450 gas head is better than an M head. Mike
