Who is this "Moldex"? 2500 for a billet 4 - 6 cyl crank does not sound that bad...

Moldex has been around for a long time, one of the first billet crank makers. They charge around $2500 for a domestic v8 billet crank.

I'm not sure how much a tractor crank would be. Might depend on if they already have prints and how big a steel billet they start with.

Re: stroker crank and rods, MOLDEX in reply to AC, 12-19-2007 04:51:14
Well, I called Moldex and a tractor crank is a whole different thing from a V8 Chevy.

He said an inline six is a lot more work than a V8. With the length and stroke a big chunk of 4340 billet is needed to start with. They estimated A 5.25" stroke Billet crank for the 301 would be between $4300.-$5000.

They would need a sample stock crank sent in for an exact price and for the set up dimensions.

A 4cyl might be less,(more like a V8) but I didn't ask.

I'm not sure a $2500 billet crank is in the budget, but it's nice to know that someone is willing to make a crank for that engine.

I was thinking a worked stock crank with decent rods are in the budget.

What they did now is offset grind the rod journals 5/8" to make a 5" stroke using a Farmall A rod with a 1.75 journal. kinda sketchy, esp for a four main bearing engine. The rods aren't holding up that well either.

Thanks

What does that mean?

I called murphy and got a price and some info.

I'm planning to call Cunniham for rod prices too.

Both the above are high dollar parts (the rods)

I want to know who else to check out. I build automotive engines, but not tractor pullers till now.(and maybe just this one) I figure you guys have the lowdown.

thanks

The sad truth is that you can buy a complete stroker assembly for a small block chevy cheaper then getting a old, used, welded up, just mabe it will hold crank for a farmall. go figure. I think the pullers are the ones whos getting stroked. JMHO

Charles, Very true.

I think I WILL call Moldex before making a final decision on the crank.
