Hi,

I'm looking to improve a bored and stroked 301 (now 365 inches)and need a better cylinder head.

cannot use a diesel head

Currently has the tilt valve head. Been hearing a straight valve head from an IH black diamond truck engine....late 50's through early 60's is better.

Looking for a good head to port. which head, from what truck engine do I look for?

Is there a casting niumber to look for?

67717 R1 is the casting number of this cyl head. (truck head) best of my knoledge, they were built before 1955, or up to 1955, and most of the older 6 cyl in the trucks had cyl heads like this.. Ive found the tilt valve heads as early as 1958, but also was the same year as the 460 debut. Yep, 14 mm plugs, valves are the same, but the new heads have rotators on the exhaust valves, that can be swapped over to the older heads. also has a couple extra water holes casted in the head,,, you could run with em, or without em, but if ya could, run em, should help increase water flow and run cooler. I have yet to find a part number chart for these heads/engines,, other than the repair manuals that show the pictures, but not any thing more, so to know what its off of,, Im not sure to be exact. This is a straight valve head, or truck head. Put in a cam with a big overlap. You cannot port a tilt valve head, as much as this style head is stock up closer to the valves. Also uses a different rocker assembly, and a smaller valve cover. Best to have roller rockers built if stock is not available. Quite a bit different from the tractor heads arent they?? Hope this helps. ChadS

Thanks for the replay.

Yes, that head looks a lot different. Not just the straight valves , but the chamber shape is much different. Looks to have a smaller spark plug too.

Is that head from a Black Diamond truck engine from the late 50's to early 60's?

What size engine?

Are they all the same in the different displacements of truck engines?

Is there a casting number to look for?

I need to find a suitable head to work on.
