A friend of mine is rebuilding a cockshutt 30 for pulling. Its one my dad bought at an auction a few years ago. It was all set up for pulling, with natpa stickers from the 90s all over the fenders. It didnt go for a lot so he took a gamble on it. My neighbors wife passed away recently. He has always been into pulling as long as I can remember. He has a 1936 John Deere A with about 48 hp. He is getting too old to start it all the time. I help him as much as I can, but he wants something he doesnt have to start by hand. He asked my dad about pulling the cockshutt. Dad was happy he was interested in it, so he wants to get it refreshed for him. We tore it down to see what had been done. Someone at one time had put a 3-9/16 big bore kit in it. It is long past due to be rebuilt. We put it on the dyno and it showed 32 horse, which is what it should be stock. Any suggestions as to what can be done to reach around 45 horse? I have found a new big bore kit for it. I haven"t been able to locate anything with a high dome though. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jerry

Jerry, I would suggest taking one of the pistons you pulled out to a local machine shop to see what automotive crossover they could come up with. Good luck,
Charles

You can make the '36 A electric start using all JD parts from early styled A's. All you need is the correct top plate with starter bracket, a starter and a battery. Some don't even mount the battery, they just jump start it.
