Top Cut or No Cuts

We are having a debate in our club concerning the use of top cut tires in Div 2, most of the clubs in our area have given in to top cuts, because no wants to be the tire police. We have not allowed them, but there is a contingent pushing for them. Personally I do not like them, but I have been able to find a nice set of road worn tires that hook pretty well, so maybe I am biased. After looking at the ads for the "big" pulls (NATPA, OSATP, USAP), it looks they are split on this issue.
What experience have you seen in your clubs on top cuts vs no cuts?
Thanks
Rich

I would say take it to a vote, that should settle things down on that issue. The thing about top cut tires is that so many places allow them, that if your club wont, your pullers will go to other places and your club will lack interest of the majority of pullers in your area. Hey , try it and see what happens. You might be glad you did.

My stance is that good old tires are getting harder to find. Top cutting can be done very cheaply by almost anyone even if it involves just spinning your tires backwards. It's worked for years in our traditional club. Our 3 MPH class (15.5 top cut) was what the club was built on and I ran road wore tires for a few years. When I personally switched to top cut it was cheap and worked well. It limited the policing in our club.

I like top cuts and would really want them in for div 2, the stock class or div 1 is still where tractors that are " off the farm" can pull, div 3 is full cuts, div4 is about anything goes, so why not have top cuts in div2, most guys want them or already have them, so let em go.

I am going through that right now I found some worn 15.5s they still dont hook, I have tried to find and worthy used tires..... .... no way they dont exist here in ca, now I have to buy brand new 16.9s..... ..... so we will see. I wish our club would just give in and allow us to cut our tires

If you don't have top cuts then people who find a nice set of ( road worn ) tires have an unfair advantage over the people who can't find a farmer with a nice set of worn tires . make them top-cut and everyone can have a set of road worn tires. there is really no difference just a matter of what we call it and one will be perfectly worn and one will be not perfect . we have that problem too and the got road worns are in charge for now.

USAP has allowed top cut for 2 years or more. At first they were cut just enough to even up the tread. I looked at the King of Hill tractors yesterday 90%of them had begin to cut into the body of the tires. 2 more years they will be full cuts.
So it would be simpler to have NO CUT TIRES in stock classes. When you allow a little bit of something is soon becomes all of something.

Blair you got busted with top cut tires and you are trying to say they are road worn. You have a stroked tractor engine pulling stock classes, all you have to do is run your top cut tires and move up one class & you would be legal, but that piece of plastic must be more important.

If we go to top cuts, what does that do to the new guy who wants to pull his Grandad"s tractor?

Well, most off the farm tractors have worn tires and sometimes very nice ones, if not, I would say let it in your club and enjoy the results, less finger pointing (alot less), and you can pull better, I recommend the Dewalt brand electric planer myself.

RCP, Tractor pulling, like any competition, is that. Competition. What's stock? 0.90" overbore, M&W, Improved Cylinder head? Weights? ETC... We used to take our tractors to the county fair and they were stock - well, sort of... but they were still used on the farm. The 70 had a PowerBlock, and the B had +0.90 aluminum pistons in it. But as far as we were concerned, they were stock tractors (off the farm). We hung weights wherever we could from the brackets that we made for that one pull each year.

There isn't a class for "stock" tractors. Maybe 30 years ago. Not today. Pull and have fun.

If you're going to pull "Grandad's tractor", do it because you WANT to, not because you think you HAVE to WIN. And don't get upset when someone that has topcuts or a better engine beats you - get that warm fuzzy when you beat the guys with the "souped up" tractors. And if you don't beat anyone, who cares - You got to pull Grandad's tractor!!!

We too are going throught this issue in SC. Looks like we will wind up approving because you cannot draw a line and say this is legal and this is not...road worn, spun backwards, ground with a grinder, shaved with a power plane, or just run up and down a paved road for God only knows how many hours...the results are neary the same. Only a brand new set of tires is truely a "stock tire". We will be very critical of the front edge in any inspections done next year.

I don't want to see the top cuts in div 2 at puttsville unless they make them legal on everything but olivers. lol. No there was some talk about the top cuts at last months meeting about maybe allowing them with a size limit like hill top has. I don't care. I go to pull. The problem with the top cuts is there is to many other places that don't allow them. Need to come to Dec. meeting if you're a member of W.P.A.T.P.A. Thats the only way to say yes or no!
