I have a chance to buy a IH 1066 or a JD 5020. Which tractor would be better for pulling with. Most people around here pull IH's. The ones who pull JD's are 4430's and such. How much horsepower do these tractors haved stock? and what about building them to get the most horses out. Which would be cheaper to work on and still be competitive. Thanks.

i would go with the 5020.if you put a 619 in it.And make it a 6030. A 1066 will turn a lot of rpm's but the the hot farm class has a 3000 rpm limit and a 619 will turn that.you will have to take the weight off.i got mine down to 8500 pounds.you might also need to a splitter gear in it because 7th is to slow and 8th to fast.you can put 466 rods in it and get the cubes up to 680.
it just easy hp and you will end up with a lot more cash in your pocket.

The 1066 should have the torque amplifier, which will give you shift on the go if you want. The 5020 JD has an 8 speed synchro, no shift under load, but factory has a larger motor (your choice)Hey David, when are you going to start pulling the Ferguson 165? Joey and your Dad have had all the fun. Kay wants to take you on with the stompin' 504, she may pull the Oliver yet this year.

jack,i gotta agree with these guys,youre better off with the 1066,and im a massey fan!i wouldnt modify it,but....the 1066 is a great pulling tractor in heavy classes.ive seen people all over ohio do good in pulls with 1066es.good luck!

Each tractor has it's pro's and cons but a 1066 is the better buy in my opion.The 10 has part avaibility, weighs less, easy to get the rpm's, more wheel speed,and a little cheaper.This all coming from a Deere guy.

In my opinion, you can buy lots of horsepower for either tractor probably for about the same amount of money that is horsepower/dollar. However, from what I have seen, it is easier to lighten the 1066 to run in more classes than it is to lighten the 5020.

I also just posted on the farmall/international forum a 1066 for sale. It is a beautiful tractor with very low hours. Next week I will get it into the classifieds with pics. and so on. The owner of this tractor could get you set up very well for pulling hot farm with this tractor.

i would deffamitly go with the 1066 it weighs less its easer to turn up looks better gets better weight transfer then any john deere and if you decide to go super stock later on down the road its a lot easer to modafy you can always take the rear out of a 1566 or 1586 to get better gearing in heavy classes and the TA is a big help. hope i help anserd your qustin. ~ Kevin
