How to attract out-of towners to FFA Pull?

Some of our Danville FFA students and I have been talking, and we're curious as to what would help attract a few new "out of towners" to our FFA Benefit pull on April 26 of next year. The past two years we've tried to hold a farm safety day along with the pull, but that event hasn't been attended very well, so we're going to ditch that idea so that the kids that show up can spend their time helping run the pull, scales, etc. more than they've been able to in the past.

Would a half page add in the Hook help to spread the word. If so - would people be willing to drive from out of the area for a ribbon pull (we've had some make the trip from out of state - just looking for a few more). I know some pulls have a pay-back class or two throughout the day just to help draw a few extra guys in, but I'm a little leary of that idea - people don't seem to get along as well when going after $$ at the end of the track.

The pull is less than 15 minutes off of interstate 80 in Central Pennsylvania, with two exits to choose from when coming - one with a large truck stop, and one with 5-6 different hotels for lodging if needed. We're really set up nicely for visitors I think - we just need to get them in.

Thanks for any input. Mark your calendars now for April 26, 2008!

Mike

It's a gamble, but have a 3750#, $500 to win and a 5750#, $500 to win. To us rednecks, this is like a 401k and lottery all rolled into one. We had a $5000 Demolition Derby in Iowa a few years back and there were so many cars there, you couldn't count them all. (Course, once I get past 23, I run out of fingers and toes) The gamble being that enough people don't show up to pay out. But if you advertise, Hook Mag, here, Contact some of the local clubs within 100 miles or so of where you are. Make sure you don't conflict with their schedule and see if they'll help you with the advertising - all they need to do is mention it a few times at their pulls.

Not sure I agree with Fruitfarmer, it's not the NATPA rules people don't care for, it's some of the people and the way the rules are enforced. I don't have a problem wth them, but others do.

USAP rules are REALLY easy to follow.

Put in NATPA rules and you'll lose most of your local pullers.

Use NATPA rules and enforce them.

People don't like to drive a lot of miles and then be told they can't pull because they are told NATPA rules will be used and then get there and find out you're only using SOME of the NATPA rules.

Also some payback will help.

ADVERTISE. Everything you have in your house/farm/place of work/eat/drink/wear, etc....everything.... is advertised. Pick the item or items (track, sled, rules, other events, location, etc) that your group feel are the best reasons for a puller to come and advertise them.

First and foremost you must have rules that most out of town folks would be willing to travel for. Meaning using something like USAP or NATPA rules as people will be accustomed to running under them. These rules will draw pullers. The biggest problem I see with the program you folks are running is your lack of RPM rules and limits. In the past you advertised your program to be associated with farm safety. There is nothing more dangerous than a stock or more so modified tractor engine running over RPM. Professional antique tractor pulling does not include unregulated or open RPM engines. To promote safety and allow this someone needs to take a lesson on antique tractor pulling and safety starting with your promoting committee. Where do you folks get liability insurance for this kind of program? If you want out of town folks, get acceptable/safe rules for the program. Nothing wrong with a tractor pull or a FFA benefit as most tractor pullers will support it. Just got to have rules to draw them. Good Luck
