I have a 1937 farmall f 20 that has been in our family since the 50"s. We still use it around the farm to pull hay wagons around and run the auger during the harvest. I took it out to an antique pull this past summer with meager results. Does anybody out there have any hints/suggestions to get this old girl pulling hard? I"ve got everything tuned up with the zenith carb but don"t have a lot of knowledge on the mag and governor on these old hunks of iron. I put it on the dyno at the show and it came out to 23 hp (should be at 27 from factory). I also was unable to run 540 rpm on the pto and they had to look up the rated hp in the book with the rpm that I was able to turn. This tractor was restored about 10 years ago. It got new sleeves and a complete overhaul. It runs good under load but simply ran out of power very early in the pull...any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

depends how much he needs out of it for power, he could go to 502ci or bigger and wait for the spaghetti crankshaft to break if no center main is installed but i don't think that is what he is after, easy pulling sled and loose track and a mild f-20 will do ok with div. 1 maybe 2 rules

exactly why you don't need a 6" crank as you stated...drop in some 4020 pistons and sleeves, cheap HP (4.25 bore)...been there done it...trust me!!!!! leave the stroke alone

You have to be way more than a 4" bore and 6" stroke is OK (even 5.5), IF you have a good bore in there

I wouldn't build a family tractor with sentimental attachments, find a junker and build that one instead as you will have to make changes that will affect the originality. 4" pistons and a Heisler head(if you can find one) would help abunch. 6" or more stroke would help alot more.

The reason you are loosing power is easy, its because these tractors run on magnitos, which don't keep their power under a load. I had an H that was the same way, we put a distributor on it, and we had better results.
