I think I have done everything to this engine and it still doesnt run right. This is a international 301 gas. I have adjusted the valves and the carb is adjusted right. It sounds good when it is running at one rpm. But when you snap the throttle it slobbers and sometimes dies. It did this before I installed electronic ignition. It did it afterwards as well. It is timed correctly and the spark is good. I think the advance in the distributor isnt working right. What do I need to do to rebuild the distributor so that it runs smoothly? Where can I get the parts? What do I need to watch out for so that I put it back together right? Also the tractor pops back out through the carb sometimes while I am starting it. Could this be part of the distributor not advancing correctly?

Just curious if you got this resolved as my 560 is doing the same thing, it was doing it before the electronic ignition and afterwards as well. I am currently in the process or rebuilding mine and want to get past this stumble. I adjusted the carb today until I ran out of fuel, I just want to get it figured out.

open the throtle up untill it starts to stumble then adjust your carb to get this out. might not work for you but it usually works on mine

Its not breathing. If your going from idle to full throttle, "cracking the throttle" It stumbles, hesitates, pops thru the carb. To help aid the stumble, you can go smaller on the venturi size, a 33 or a 29. Next, timing is off,,, they like their timing,,, and make em run a little labored at idle,,, (by ear) then dial the carb in to help smooth it out. Could have an intake valve too tight,,, double check em,,, Make sure the coil isnt getting hot,,, if it has a resistor, you should be ok. I ran points, with a spring set for the advance from a HEI chevy distributor, that speeds up the distributors reaction time,,, you want the distributor giving you full advance right at 1500, but, Id say it was all in on mine at 1300,,, helped crispen the throttle responce,,,,, When you do all the adjustments,,, get it warmed up to the weather conditions, Lately, its been a fly by night, up and down temps. So if its all warmed up to operating temp, weather may not affect the carb settings as much. A real good solution is the port the exhaust and manifold. That will uncork the severly backpressured cyl head on the exhaust side. At higher rpms, the air flow is fast enough,, things are moving,,, when your going from idle to full throttle, it backbuilds in the exhaust ports, and the engine can hesitate, be kinda sluggish on accleration and be tempermental. Shoot me an email sometime at [email protected],,, I have a 806 head with no valves and another head that has been ported,,, that I can send some pictures of. Just a simple gasket match port,,, but when you see the gasket, and the actual port in the head,,, big difference. JMHO, it needs it, but the venturis and the timing and the weight springs will help it out. Autolite plugs,,,,, 3116 or 386's . gap em at .032-.035 for starters,,, and work your way up,,, plug gap can affect acceleration too,,, especially if the timing is too far advanced. Hope this helps! Chad

If it pops out the Carb it might be to lean or to far advanced. To see if your advance is working you can twist your rotor and see if it will move back on its own. The advance springs should bring it back.

It is not running lean. What other tests can I do to see if my distributor is in good order? How do I see if it is advancing properly?

Faulty dist cap. Spray some wd40 in there and fire it up then hit the throttle and see if it will come up on rpms.
