Can someone please tell me if the Valves, & springs out of a late styled "B" Cylinder Head will work on an unstyled Flat head ? I am wanting to build the Flat head for my late styled "B" Puller. I am currently running a Flat Head on my "GM" and it is a very strong pulling tractor. Seems like I have heard something about small block Chevy valves being used also. Any and all help, will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Richard, I assume you are wanting to put the flat head from an 39/40 vintage model "B" on a later model "B" block. I also assume you are aware that the two head bolt patterns are different. It may be possible to move two of the head bolt holes in the 39/40 flat head to make it work on the later block. The 39/40 head water holes should be close enough to line up with later block water holes pattern. A earlier flat head as use on unstyled "B" tractors will not work because of the difference in water port patterns between head and block. The 39/40 flat head used the same valves as the unstyled 35/38 head did. I have used unstyled model "A" exhaust valves in the flat head model "B" " intake. The valve guide ID had to increased as well as the "A" valve stem had to be shortened. A better and more economical valve to consider is a Cummins valve used in a N 11 series diesel engine. They cost about a third of what the John Deere valve will and the stem is long enough but it too will have to be shortened. The guide will have to be sized to match the metric Cummins valve. I have used these valves to replace the original late model "B"" Heisler brand head valves and they work very well. Good Luck, Dave Wickman

Dave, I have a styled B Heisler that is in need of new intake valves. I was considering styled A exhaust valves, enlarging the guide hole, shortening the stem, and modifying the stem end to accept B keepers and retainers. Those valves are expensive @ Deere. Do I get the Int. or Exh. valve for N 11 Cummins to do this? Thanks for the information.
Marcus

I have had two of the late "B" Heisler heads fitted with the Cummins valves. I used the intakes for intakes and the exhaust for the exhaust. They are almost the exact same diameter. The stems are metric and a bit smaller if I remember right. Stem length is longer than the original Heisler valve and they were shortened to match the original Heisler valve stem length. I also used the Cummins valve cap and keepers to match valve stem diameter. They are cheap to buy compared to unstyled "A" John Deere valves. DW

Thanks so much for going into all the details. I'm not even sure what year "B" my flat head came off of. What got me to thinking about it was the fact that I just had a Valve job done on my "G" flat head. The "B" head, I purchased off ebay several years ago. Wonder why the head for the unstyled "G", will work Ok on a styled "G"? I will have to do some more looking to see what can be a workable solution.
Thanks again.

Richard, Of the three model "G" heads the last two can be swapped. Of the five different "B" heads the last three can be swapped without modification. The last three all had a recessed combustion chamber the same size. The 39/40 "B" head is the closest and would have a casting number B1305R. If your flat head is marked B354R it will not work because water ports between push rod holes are drastically different. DW

Randy, If your folks knew you were on this web site they probably would want to block it! Even if it don't involve girls!! If you get to reading all the stuff on here you will be wanting to modify your "A" for some serious HP. Just Kidding! Hope your new little brother is doing well. See you later, Uncle Dave (AKA WTW)

HA ha very funny.

I think that we are coming back to the farm this weekend. Is that 2510 that you were talking about at your place?
