I am considering mounting up some great 18.4 tires. I see folks mounting 18.4 from 15-20 inch rims. Sometimes I see wide rims taken to the extreme on fairly narrow tires. Right now I run 15.5 on 14 inch rims with 6 pounds and they work very well. I have also observed tires on very wide rims with a ton of air in them do well on the same track. I'm sure the hitch height drops much less! Can any of you wide rim guys explain your logic?

Theory is that the tire will spread more on a wide rim. However, you will also loose some height. So, if a little more tire speed is what you need, then wide rims could hurt a tiny bit. I have my 18.4's on 16 inch rims, and they bite even across as can be seen pulling out from a hook on a tight track. I would not put them on 14's but I think 16-18 is perfect. Some guys go 20-22 inches, which does not make sense in my mind.

A wider rim (to a point) puts more of the cleat in the dirt. If you don"t believe it just look at the finishing order of the NATPA. Most if not all of the winners are running 16-20 inch rims on Div.3 tractors and up. Had you whether dig a hole 12" wide or one 18"???
