no regulator

Does anyone know how to wire up a tractor without using a regulator? I want to use a light or something to prevent overcharging. This is a 460 with a 12 volt generator. I have a MSD box that drains a lot and I am not really that concerned about overcharging. I use it as a pulling tractor and it doesn't get run much. Can I just wire the two posts on the generator to my battery? How do you polarize a generator without a regulator?

You need a regulator it is the only way to control output voltage. A three brush generator will regulate its own current "amperage" but you still need a cutout relay style voltage regulator to keep the voltage down or you will burn out your MSD box not to metion what it will do to your ignition points. But I think your 460 has a 2 brush generator so you need current and voltage regulation. Besides without the regulator the generator will drain your battery. The generator system sould be capable of charging at least a 20 amp rate or better - I doubt you need more than that. Touch batt. to gen. terminals to polarize. Or consider an internally regulated alternator for 1 wire hookup and better output.

If any one knows different please speak up.

My opinion is based on over 20 years as a profesional mechanic. ASE master certified and Ford master certified.

I should make myself clear and say without the regulator the generator will drain the battery when the engine is not running.
