I want to convert my 460 pulling tractor to an advanced electronic ignition system. What model of MSD kit do I need to buy? What is in the kit? Are these systems reliable? I had a pertronix kit before but it didn't last all that long. What is the MSD kit called that shoots multiple sparks? How much would this kit cost entirely?

If your coil is overheating with MSD you have the wrong coil, it should not be overheating. Also if you use the points to trigger the MSD do not use the condensor, it will throw off the signal to the MSD box

You don't have to buy electronic ingnition it'll work off of a points system. You'll need to go to MSD's website and you can get a wiring diagram off of it.

about $200 My MSD 6AL kept my v-8 from blowing up when I twisted a transmission counter-shaft in my M while I was pulling.

If I remember correctly, the unit will disperse multiple sparks to each cylinder up till 2 or 3000 RPM. My unit came with a 3 or 4000, a 6000, 7000, and 8000 rpm chip. You can also buy chips in 200 rpm increments.

What else do I need to buy with the 6AL? Can I just hook this up with my points? Do I need a bigger coil?

I really don't know. The price for electronic ignition for me was about $250 and a hotter coil was $50. I felt it was money well spent.

I had a friend hook my Msd box up. He didn't feel that it was that hard to do.

MSD 6AL. It is cheapest in Jegs or Summit. This way you can put a rev limiter chip in the box.

6AL is a good setup. Lots of additional equipment you can add to them. You have to watch the power going to the coil, use a resistor. It will help keep the MSD cooler and not prone to burn up the wires on the transformer inside the box. You can use the points as a trigger, you can do it either way. Just dont overpower the coil with voltage and it will last a long time. If, at anytime, the coil is hot, temperature wise to the touch, you are overpowering the coil, and it could explode. Pullers dont really run em long enough to really heat the coil up,,, but sometimes, when they do run em for a while, it gets a miss that is unexplained,, and its usually the coil overheating and shorting out. Keep em dry and in a cool spot. Supposed to be a double spark output,,, a ford duraspark does the exact same thing if you can put the ford pickup in the dizzy, thats the best right there now! I think it would work with electronic conversion kit though,,,, Never tried to adapt a duraspark box to a tractor. Hope this helps,
