moline HD800 block machining

How much can be safely machined from the top of an HD800 jug?I need to cut .275"-.325"to correct my deck height because of an altered stroke an rod length.I would hate to ruin one because of cutting into a water passage.

hi have cut .250 off bottom of cylinders hd-800 then redrill holes and tap deeper

You can take off about .200 to .250 safely. You wont run into water the problem is the threaded holes in the top of the block. If you take off too much you wont have enough threads to hold when you torque the heads down. Your best alternative if you need more that .250 is to take some off the crankcase you can take about the same off there depending on the crankcase you are using.
