Gray, I'm not real crazy about driving 800 miles to find out that my tractor is not legal. You wanna clarify that side shield thing? I think enough people have hinted at it.

Material, thickness, how big can the holes/slots be. What the test criteria is. As mentioned before, are Deere's treated differently (the engines are WAAAY different).

Thanks for clarifying

They are not going to give any specifications for the same reason other organizations do not give them on wheelie bars and shields. In the event something did happen with there so called specified safety equipment. The organization could/would be held liable because they specified how the safety equipment had to be. Plain and simple, it opens them up to a possible liability law suit. So its just allot less liable to say you got to have it and not how to have it.

Sounds like someone might want to take a long hard(en) look at the rules again. Wedding receptions usually don't go over too well with turds in the punch bowl.

If Mean Green was truly concerned about safety they would take a hard look at enforcing safe wheelie bars and do something that would actually be a safety issue. With the short sled chain they use and the many tractors I have seen there with short wheelie bar lengths (bars that don't extend outside the circle of the rear tire) that are nonfunctional and nothing more than decoration. Maybe that's all they want for side shields too, decoration? Some idiot behind some insurance desk probably needed a ego trip and wanted to push his authority. Any one that knows antique tractor pulling knows that side shields on some models are no value. I suppose if you pull a John Deere the operator will have to wear a armored suit being the side shields do nothing for them. Maybe in case the carburetor blows up on these tractors it will be of some value. Can't say I ever heard that happening. If they kept the RPM down where antiques should be running they would not need this rule. I got to agree with the other post and think the results of this one may effect entry numbers. They may have to go back to a one or two day event. I know of one guy for sure that is not going to put side shields on his division three tractors for Tunica or any other associations. They won't miss me but they might miss allot of us!

looks to me like this rule will either reduce the number of tractors going to this pull (how many 4 mph tractors have 'safety side shields'), or cause more people to complain/agrue about rules because of the inabilitiy to inforce the intent of the rule....

as mentioned in other posts, no specs, etc were given....my stock MM U has factory "side shields" and by rule they will work...or will they...

the rule doesn't say anything about what the shields have to be, cover, etc, so any factory tin work should pass, as long as it has something on the side.

"Requiring side shields in the Modified classes" - as in everything from 4MPH and up, or just the 8 & 12?

So are there specifications on the side shields? Material, thickness, how big can the holes/slots be? You're saying no shields, no hook?

Tractors with side shields may be inspected at the discretion of track officials. Refusal to remove shields upon a request by an official will result in disqualification and forfeiture of all entry fees.

Protests and disputes must be made before the end of the class in which the issue occurred. Protestors tractor will be examined first. Then and only then will the protested tractor be checked.

THE FIRST PULLER in all classes may throw out his first pull and request a re-pull provided the first was deemed legal. He must make the request and re-pull immediately following the first pull and before leaving the track. Weights may be moved from front to rear or rear to front but no additional weights may be added. Drawbar height must not exceed 20" after any adjustments and may be checked by officials prior to the re-pull. The re-pull cannot be delayed until later in the pulling order. Lamont - The question was "what are the specs for the side shields?". A Division III tractor doesn't have side shields unless he's trying to hide something. So, it looks like a Bugs Bunny bedsheet will meet the requirements. Read that last line 11 times. It doesn't specify the actual function of the side shield, just that you have to have it.

That was the point I was trying to get across quietly. It says side shields. I wouldn't ask too many questions. It's sort of a silly rule anyway if it's for safety. How many side shields do you think will be built out of material thick enough to stop a flying cam lobe or rod? The side shields that I've seen, I could knock a hole in them with a screwdriver - maybe a clawhammer on some of the thickest ones. They're jokes for safety.

I am by no means an expert here but I am thinking that they are wanting to side shields to be thick enough to stop or at least really slow down parts is something decides to grenade.

I guess if you want thin sheet metal and don't care anything about safety then according to the way the rules are written that will work. Personally I like safety.

As for the Modifieds swapping tires and running in Farm Stock, personally I think anyone wanting to do that isn't much of a person. It's legal cheating period. But if beating stock tractors with a modified one is what it takes to get you happy then go for it. Heck i pull farm Stock there and know when I go in I am making a donation because of people like you. Luckily I am there to have a good time which by the way I do!

Lamont, what you bringng this year? Got my old 88 again and thinking of bringing a A that we got since it whooped my butt all last year! LOL!!!!

See ya'll in a few months!!!

I'm gonna try to have my DC down there. It'll be strictly Farmstock I 5500lb and 6500lb. I don't think there's any way it'll make 4500lb. That big weight in the driver's seat kills the lightweight classes.
