Does anyone know how to tell if an 1850 motor is used in an 88 or Super 88 row crop?

The 265, 283, and 310 are all the same blocks, there are a bunch of ways to tell, one is the oil plug, the other is the front of the block, the 310 will have a piller looking thing where the alternator bolted on factory, its a cast piece that sticks out about and inch with 2 half inch holes in it, the second is the manifold the exhaust port on the exhaust manifold will be pretty close to the number 2 cylinder, where the 88 was almost in the middle, and if its an older 1650-1800B series head it will have a 2 piece or a "sandwich" head the top part will be about an inch thick. also the govener linkage will look nothing like an 88. and if you look at the water neck on the top of the engine, they will have to cut it down and offset it to make the top rad hose work. and the stock air cleaner will not fit in a 77 with a 310 in it, im not sure about the 88 but i know the 77 wont.

Blake,

This is actually Britton doing research on our competition. We pulled at Lafayette this weekend and won our class, but were severly outpowered by all the Super 88's, and would like to know why, as we were pulling in a factory stock class.

Yes, we are planning on pulling at Nicollet county. Are You?

Blake,

I know an Ollie 88 has about twice the stock horsepower as a stock H. That is why you don't see many people make an H work. I also know that if you get hooked with the track right at these stock pulls, you can outpull a tractor with more horsepower. That is the fun of pulling with my H. We did it in Lafayette, as we outpulled 3 Ollies that were obviously not stock. I enjoy pulling against Ollies, but I think they should play by the rules, as I do. I know yours is not a stock Ollie anymore, also, but I don't mind pulling against you at Nicollet County, because we are not pulling in a stock class. As long as you are playing by the rules and being honest, I don't mind pulling and even getting beat fairly.

So you really think that all the tractors were stock? I've got some oceanfront property in Ohio I'd sell you cheap.

A quick glance, if it looks really big in the engine area and looks crammed in, then it"s not a 88 or Super engine block. If you have seen an original 88 then see a 310 in one trust me you will know....

Well, if it"s 310 it doesn"t look anything like a model 190 that came in the 88/S88. The 310"s have the intake and exhaust on opposite sides. Unless they did some repiping, there will be a pipe coming out of each side of the hood.

The 310 gas engine has the intake and exhaust manifold on the same side as the 88 gas engine. The 310 diesel has the manifolds on opposite sides of the head just like the 88 diesel engine. Both the 310 diesel and the 310 gas will fit in an 88 88 chassis with few if any changes.

OK, I thought the gas version of that engine was actually a 283, not a 310

The 1850 used the 310 gas engine and the 1750 used the 283. The two engines are the same except for a 3/8" longer stroke.

Actually, the 1755 was the only one that used a true 283. The 1750"s were 3 3/4 bore which made them 265. Awful silly if you ask me, the 1750 came with either a 265 gas or a 310 diesel.

You can tell without opening the side panel,.. The drain plug on an 1850 will be visable below the frame of the tractor when you look at it from the side. an 88 plug is up in the frame further. A 310 also has a much deeper sound.
