WD45 puller emergency!!

Help me guys, I need more power from my 45. I've studdied popular low buck mods like wd pistons in the 45 with 4.5" crank & the 45 flat head. some say the comp is too high & also that the crater top piston is important for the flat head.

also looked at the D17 piston option. But how about pistons from a 175?

I want to use 175 pistons, 175 cam & a stock WD45 head kit (new valves, springs, seals etc)

will the 175 stuff slide right in my WD45 engine?

any body got any better ideas for about the same money?

I'm in a big hurry & need to order parts possibly today.

Thanks

Dave

Actually after a little thought on the heads I decided to take them in to a local shop & have the seats recut & do a 3 angle grind on the new valves. They'll press the old guides out, press my new ones in & reasemble the head for me with the new springs, valves & keepers.

I'll let the shop handle the head, should be ready to put on when I get it back tomorrow. I'll just put the rocker rail back on & set the lash with the feeler gauge & I should be good to go.

I sure hope them sleeves don't put up too much of a fight tonight.

go to kieth blacks web site click on the engine calculater and find a piston with a pin hieght that will put you .400 to .350 in the hole at top dead center and that will raise youre compression higher than any stock allis piston.

jt richardsons cam grind will give a little more compression do to the overlap being tightend up . there is no such thing as to much compression . compression makes torque and horsepower . if you get the compression past 12.1 youll need to oring the head and purchase a copper gasket from barney taylor and a starter from me . all three barney jt and me are friends. have the phone numbers for both in my addres book.

I have a tractor with 175 pistons and they arent cheap. Go with WD flat top 1/8" over and u'll get more compression. The after market tisco pistons.Get a cam ground from JT Richardson - i dont have his # but its fairly cheap and it get good H.P. Its a cheap build and its good for 75 horse

well, I've got the parts now. picked them up last week. I had some time last Thurs to pull the head off, forward cylinder looks like hell, all black & crusty, the 3 others look pretty normal. Forward cylinder was also the one that gave me troubles fouling plugs. I'll have some time tonight to drop the pan, remove the caps & push the old pistons out. Anybody got any tips for pulling the old sleeves?

Pistons I have are 175 high altitude. still a crater top. I'll be able to compare old to new tonight when I get the old ones out.

Valves look like crap, hopefully I can get my new valves to seat decent without too much work.

I think I'll see power improvements by the simple fact that I'm freshening up my head & getting a new set of slugs & rings inside new sleeves. Bumping compression 2 points has got to help some too.

I have a pull on saturday so I guess I'll find out, I have to hurry & get the engine back together so I can get a little easy run time on it before I hook up to the sled on Sat.

I'll keep you guys posted, thanks for all the replies.

I have built many allis engines.wc=175 engine parts are all compadible.A good set of wd flat top pistons and a wd45 crank is good.175 high attitude pistons do a good job to if you have a 175 head use it.

How well do the stock style WD flattops work with a stock WD-45 head? Which rods do you use? Will a later cam from a D or 100 series help anything? I am working on a budget puller and it would be great if this would work out.

the heads are compatible with all the pistons beccause theres no cumbustion chamber in the head

I was just wondering what was the optimal combo, I am pulling a WD-45 but have access to 2 WD's for parts. So if I need to scavange a head and pistons out of one to put with my WD-45 crank for the best combo I could.

I just ordered a set of allis 175 pistons, rings & sleeves. it said specifically in the notes "8.25 comp"

it's the only way I know for sure what I'm getting, there are so many kits that you can buy that cover the whole 226 family but if you call & ask which piston you are getting (WD fat, WD45 crater, D17 crater, 170 crater, 175 crater, High alt, LP?) they have no idea.

With this I know I'm going to get 8.25 with my stock crank & rods which I'm thinking is about right for me wanting to add more power but not necessarily wanting to build a "time bomb"

keeping the old stock cam in for now, just doing the 8.25 crater pistons in standard 4" bore & putting fresh valves/springs/guides etc in the head... maybe sneak a little porting into the job while I'm inside there.

I'll keep looking for input & suggestions but for now I'll just go with this for a start.

thanks.

Dave
