Been looking at my intake/exhaust manifold for my F-12. I'd really like to polish the runners, but couldn't figure out an easy way. Got to thinkin' and thought of the old 3/8" drive extentions that flexed. Ya know, the ones that looked like springs, and flexed in a nice radius.

I'm picturing a small hone(ball stone style) on the end of a flex shaft. Do these exist? Or is there some kind of tool that would work better? I've searched a few hone sites and can't find anything. I really don't want to cross drill it to get access to the runners. If no tools available, is there a company that specializes in hard to reach runners? Thanks, Doug N

I hope that you do not expect to gain anything other than a smooth, shiny intake.

The ports are already larger than the engine will flow even if you turn it 4000RPM. Make them larger and you will only hurt performance.

Greg, I didn't say I wanted to enlarge(port), I just want it smoothed out some cause it is a real rough casting job. I don't think that will hurt anything do you?

I agree, the venturi in the carb is only about 5/8" compared to the ports which are 1". But the way I was taught building engines was the smoother the flow the more HP you get, weather it's a 5/8" lawnmower port or a 2" high performane head. Rough casting marks create "eddy's", for a real uneven flow. According to Robert's carb repair chart, For a 122 CID turning 2000 RPM I need 53.5 cfm. So my next step is to flow test the carb. I'm sure I'll need to machine a new venturi, I don't think 5/8" will flow that much. Am I on the wrong path? Doug N

With the old carbs. that do not atomize the fuel well the ruff casting in the intake will actually help atomize the fuel better. Just did not want you to waste your money for diminished performance. Just my $.02 (have spent 30+ years on the flow bench and dyno)

Thanks for your concern. So you're the guy I need to be talkin' to about my f-12 rebuild.

So you think I should leave it alone then? What about at least matching the intake port to the head, or would that be a waste too? Should I still be wanting to flow test the carb to get it at 53.5 cfm? Sorry for all the questions, but this aint no small block chevy, totaly different animal. Doug N

I would match the ports and blend them in 3/4" allot more power & torque can be made with a camshaft, compression and a good ignition system. You would not believe how the old low compression engines respond to an MSD ignition.

I askes this very same question about three months ago and most people suggested a rotary ball hone. In looking at the websites I could not find one that flexed either.
If you do find one I sure wouldnt mind hearing about it!
